What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit is an opportunity for us to get to know you, your health history, and your goals for treatment. Our practitioners take a holistic approach, looking at the big picture rather than just symptoms.

Diagnosis & Consultation

A Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis involves a thorough conversation about your health concerns, lifestyle, and medical history. This in-depth approach helps us create a personalized treatment plan tailored specifically for you.

Tongue & Pulse Diagnosis

In TCM, the tongue and pulse provide valuable insights into your overall health. Your practitioner will examine your tongue and check your pulse to gather diagnostic information. For best results, avoid brushing your tongue on the day of your visit, as this can remove important indicators of your body’s internal balance.

Once your diagnosis is complete, your practitioner will design a customized treatment plan that may include acupuncture along with other complementary therapies such as:

  • Moxibustion (a warming therapy using herbal heat).
  • Cupping therapy (to improve circulation and relieve muscle tension).
  • Gua Sha (gentle scraping to release muscle tension and promote healing).
  • Tui Na therapeutic massage
  • Herbal medicine recommendations

How Long Does an Acupuncture Treatment Take?

  • Initial Visit: 90 minutes – includes a detailed consultation, diagnosis, and first acupuncture treatment
  • Follow-Up Sessions: 45-60 minutes – includes progress evaluation and treatment

Acupuncture is cumulative, meaning that the effects build over time. Many patients begin to notice improvements within a few sessions, but the number of treatments needed varies depending on the condition being addressed.

What Should I Wear?

Comfort is key! We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing to your session. Depending on where the needles are placed, you may be asked to roll up sleeves or pant legs. If necessary, we provide sheets to ensure your privacy and comfort.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture is not painful—in fact, many patients find it deeply relaxing. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair—and feel nothing like hypodermic needles used in medical injections.

You may feel a mild sensation upon insertion, such as a slight pinch, warmth, tingling, or a gentle heaviness, which are all normal responses indicating that your body’s energy (Qi) is being activated.

Does My Insurance Cover Acupuncture?

Many insurance plans now cover acupuncture. At Tranquility Base Acupuncture, we are happy to verify your insurance coverage before your first visit so you’ll know what to expect. Feel free to contact our office for more details.

How Long Will It Take to See Results?

Each person responds differently to treatment. Some experience immediate relief, while others require several sessions before noticing significant changes. Many conditions require a course of 6-10 treatments for lasting improvement, though acute issues may resolve more quickly.

I’m Afraid of Needles—Can I Still Try Acupuncture?

Yes! If you’re hesitant about needles, our practitioners can start with a gentle approach, using the finest, silicon-coated needles for minimal sensation. We also offer needle-free alternatives such as acupressure, cupping, and herbal medicine to help you receive the benefits of acupuncture without discomfort.

Many people who were initially nervous about needles leave their session feeling relaxed, reassured, and eager to return.
